Zennor deemed it essential to get her team and all her allies on the same page. Lendrick’s involvement was not yet essential. When the time came to move and shut things down, Zennor would present Lendrick with the fullest possible version of the facts, providing him with the totality of evidence he needed to give him confidence in her plan. But until she was able to package everything perfectly, Zennor needed to keep moving forward, rallying her troops, slotting all the pieces into place. Calling a meeting at Launceston was impossible, so she did the next best thing, and called a meeting at a motorway service station where everyone would have no problem finding a moment to attend. The biggest risk was being tailed.

It was a five pm meeting. Later would have been better still, and less obvious in terms of leaving the police station, but Zennor had her family obligations, so five pm it was.

Zennor was the first to arrive. She drank a coffee as she processed all she’d heard at Whitstone, with the name Lika popping into her head time and again. It was a new name and bore no resemblance to anything on Bligh’s coded calendar. Not unless the K referred to Lika, but that seemed unlikely. Bligh had never shown himself to be so cryptic.

Zennor was still working through the possibilities, when Boswell walked in. Boswell saw Zennor in the corner of the food court and offered a nod, but Nicki stayed cautious. To see if she was being tailed, Boswell went to the toilets, then doubled back to the Costa concession to buy herself a drink. Zennor watched Boswell the whole way, looking for anyone following her. She saw no one. The next one in was their newest ally – DC Ashanta Carnell of the NCA.

As Boswell sat down with her coffee, Ashanta glanced back over her shoulders before she slipped into the booth beside them. It was a corner booth with padded bench seats positioned behind a massive cheese plant. Zennor had taken the most prominent of the seats to greet her colleagues, but she was reasonably sure that her guests would stay hidden from view.

“How did you get out?” asked Zennor as Carnell took her seat.

“Bligh was still out on his official work. It wasn’t difficult. I think he still trusts me.”

As she spoke, Cartwright entered the service station hall and looked around. His eyes were hollow and dark, as ever. He looked as if he hadn’t slept a wink. Zennor tilted her head past the big waxy leaves and Cartwright saw her. He stopped and pretended to look at the WH Smith store on his left, cutting inside to glance at the newspapers before he left via the other exit and headed for the group’s table. He was about to take a seat, but when he saw Carnell with them he stayed standing.

“What’s this about?” he said, asking Zennor.

“Why don’t you ask Carnell yourself?” Zennor replied. “Just take a seat, Sam.”

Cartwright took a seat beside Boswell and frowned at Carnell.
